Transport chiefs have called on a ferry operator to come clean over possible plans for a fare rise next month. The demand came yesterday after New World First Ferry said it was 'seriously considering' raising fares on the eight outlying island and cross-harbour routes it took over from Hongkong & Yaumati Ferry two months ago. Under the licensing agreement the company inherited, it can raise fares five per cent from next month. Commissioner for Transport Robert Footman said no formal notification had been received but he had been seeking an answer for weeks. 'We have been in touch with the company because . . . we want to work out what their needs are and also . . . because it is important that the public understand what's going on,' he said.
