Flying wing Matt Reede refused to recite the prayer on the lips of Hong Kong rugby followers that he will be the one to deliver the SAR to the promised land.

As Malaysia celebrated the Muslim holiday of Hari Hadj yesterday, Hong Kong's 10-strong squad were preparing in stifling heat for the start of the Malaysian Sevens - also the 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens Asian qualifier.

And all eyes were on Hong Kong Football Club skipper Reede, the newcomer in the squad who qualifies today under the International Rugby Board three-year residency ruling.

Reede brings speed to a squad who this season have shown a woeful lack of pace in their international appearances. But the man with the burning acceleration is adamant that he is not the sole key to success.

'The reality is that it needs a team effort to win. Victories will come from maintaining possession and having the guys capable of making those half-breaks,' said Reede.

'I will be focusing on my game. But everyone needs to do their job. To think that my presence will solve all Hong Kong's problems is unrealistic.
