Students draw analogies between bread making and having a positive outlook Bread-making has given secondary school students an insight into the essence of life.

  The Garden Company and RTHK organised visits to the bakery and a short-story competition with the theme 'treasure life and be positive'.

  The event was organised to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the bakery's creation of 'Life Bread'.

   Schools welcomed the campaign with enthusiasm, said Garden Company's marketing manager Regina Leung Ying-kwan.

   Comparing bread-making to her attitude towards life clinched the top prize in the short-story competition for 16-year-old Wong Wah-lok from Pentecostal Lam Hong Kong School.

   Even though the third former had not encountered big challenges so far, she was able to express a positive attitude towards life.

   She used bread-making to illustrate her outlook.

   'At the Garden plant, we were each given some dough.

  'Some students managed to mould it into a beautiful shape within a short time, but others took much longer,' Wah-lok said.

  She said that everyone was talented in some way and that the key was to work hard to achieve your goals.

   She said the shape of the bread depended on the baker and that our life, similarly, de pended on how we chose to shape it.

  Her schoolmate, Chan Pak- ka, 14, was the first runner-up.

    Michelle Li Suet-yi, 14, from Clementi Secondary School, was the second runner-up.

  Pak-ka said that many wealthy people focused too much attention on delicious food.

  He said the real meaning of life was not what we eat but what we give.

  Bread sustained life, just as our parents worked hard for us and we in return would also contribute to society, Pak-ka said.

  'Life will then continue because each of us lights up each other's life,' he said.

  Suet-yi did not find bread- making easy, but she did not give up.

  'Obstacles are inevitable. If we give up, we will never succeed.

  'Instead, we should learn from our mistakes,' Suet-yi said.

  She said it was a shame that today's youth often chose suicide when they faced difficulties.

  'Life is the most precious thing we will ever have - nothing is worth losing that.'
