Lawyers came under fire yesterday for wasting public funds by preparing an appeal in English even though the case was scheduled to be heard by bilingual judges.
Mr Justice Arthur Leong Shiu-chung said the move was a waste of time and money.
The appeal originated from the Family Court, where the case was heard and the judgment delivered in Chinese. Mr Justice Woo Kwok-hing and Mr Justice Michael Wong Kin-chow, sitting with Mr Justice Leong, are also bilingual.
Lawyers for the appellant had all documents, including the Family Court judgment, translated into English when preparing the appeal.
Mr Justice Wong said the move had wasted public funds - and paper.
'Had either party rung the registrar to check which judges would hear the appeal, such waste could have been avoided,' he said.
