I REFER to the letter headlined ''Keep the noise down at pools'' from Mr Johnson Pang (South China Morning Post, May 12), concerning the sound level of the public address system of the Fanling Swimming Pool.

To remind swimmers of safety regulations and practices, it is necessary to broadcast messages through the public address system, which has been tested and set by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.

We are mindful of the nuisance of the present noise level to residents in the vicinity, and to minimise any disturbance, the pool management has been instructed to broadcast the announcements through the loudspeakers of the individual pools, section by section.

Furthermore, in August we will be installing a replacement public address system with better quality speakers and separate control devices which we hope will further improve the situation.

If Mr Pang wishes to make any further suggestions, he is most welcome to contact Mr Thomas Choy, District Amenities Officer (North) on telephone number 673 5525.
