A man, 76, who claimed to be a mainland Ministry of State Security official who helped Lee Teng-hui gain the Taiwan presidency was sentenced yesterday to six months' jail after pleading guilty to staying in the SAR illegally. Shann Yih Cheng was also charged with possessing a forged passport, but this was subsequently dropped. He was discovered by chance while police were investigating another case. Shann told South Kowloon Court he had been assigned an important mission as an agent of the mainland's Ministry of State Security. He claimed he was closely associated with Mr Lee, now the outgoing Taiwan President, and had helped him secure his presidency. Veteran Taiwanese film stars Wang Yu and Kwan Shan were in court. They refused to comment on their relationship to Shann. Shann was refused bail pending appeal.
