MATT Reede's try-scoring spree continued at the Japan Sevens in Tokyo yesterday, but Hong Kong still found themselves in the Bowl competition at the ninth leg of the World Sevens Series tournament.
Reede, who has been in sparkling form ever since he qualified last month to play for Hong Kong under the International Rugby Board's three-year residency ruling, emerged as the SAR side's top scorer with three tries yesterday.
One of them was against Fiji. But there was no stopping the Waisale Serevi-led Fijians, who ran in seven tries to defeat Hong Kong 43-5.
Reede also scored two tries in Hong Kong's 26-14 victory over Sri Lanka, their only win in the preliminary round. In their first match of the day, against Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong tumbled to a 49-0 loss.
At the end of the day, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka were relegated from their pool to the Bowl competition. Hong Kong will meet Taiwan in the quarter-finals today.
Fiji, who finished the day unbeaten, are on course for another showdown with last weekend's Hong Kong Sevens champions New Zealand - who also remained unbeaten - in the Cup competition.
