AN all-female crew will take on the men in the premier domestic match racing event in Hongkong, the Champion of Champions series which begins this afternoon in Junk Bay. Helm Justine Evans will use the event, sailed aboard one-class Sonata craft, as a tune-up for the Nations Cup match racing series in Singapore beginning on July 5. The cream of the various racing classes clash head-to-head each year for the title of Champion of Champions. Early favourite is Greg Dagge who is representing the cruiser division but he will face stiff opposition from late entry in the series, Gordon Gregor, an accomplished Dragon and cruiser sailor who has been helming Dr Ian Nicholson's Banner 41, Intrigue, in recent months. Long-time Flying Fifteen enthusiast Bertie de Speville finds himself at the helm rather than on the judge's boat for the series. De Speville was a judge at last year's America's Cup series and will be in the unusual position of possibly being on the receiving end of a referee's decision. Gregor may well find himself discussing race tactics around the family dinner table. His wife, Fiona, is sailing as crew for Evans. A total of 12 crews from the various classes will compete in round-robin competition today. The fleet will be trimmed to six for tomorrow's second phase which will open with a second round-robin. The serious competition will follow with two best-of-three semi-finals followed by the best-of-three final.
