Hong Kong can become the region's cruise-ship hub despite its limited pier facilities, according to Jack Williams, president of Royal Caribbean International.

The Ports Authority had not ruled out expanding facilities if Royal Caribbean - the world's second-largest cruise-ship operator by revenue - made Hong Kong its regional hub, Mr Williams said.

'The Ports Authority told us that as interest grows in using Hong Kong as a vacation destination, they'd be keen on improving the facilities,' he said.

Wharf (Holdings) operates Hong Kong's only cruise terminal at Tsim Sha Tsui.

Mr Williams said Frankie Yick Chi-ming, director and general manager of Wharf Transport Investments, and officials at the Hong Kong Tourist Association would also welcome the development of an extra pier.

'If we paid for it, they'd be happy for us to build one,' he said.

In November, Wharf criticised a plan by Cheung Kong (Holdings) to build a second cruise-liner pier on the North Point waterfront. Wharf said the pier was unnecessary because of a lack of demand.
