Walt Disney chairman Michael Eisner has warned Tung Chee-hwa to clean up Hong Kong's air pollution as the Chief Executive toured the company's California headquarters on Monday.
Mr Tung said Mr Eisner had expressed Disney's concern about environmental protection and said Hong Kong should do more to tackle air pollution.
But Mr Eisner made no hint that the SAR's $30 billion deal with Disney could be threatened by the mounting pollution levels.
His comments come as local green groups continued to criticise the project for running roughshod over Lantau Island. Last night they said they found it ironic the company was now criticising Mr Tung.
Legislative Council tourism representative Howard Young said the SAR would 'have to get its act together' in the five years before Disney was due to open.
Hong Kong Greenpeace director Ho Wai-chi said: 'Now Disney is telling Hong Kong to clean up the environment. They have a point; Hong Kong will pay a price for not doing what should have been done years ago.' The Disney project at Penny's Bay has faced several environmental stumbling blocks.
