Your editorial of April 13, 'Dangerous policy', suggests 'there is a fundamental difference between reporting something accurately and advocating it'. While I agree with the logic behind this statement and understand its implications in the context of the media, it saddens me that a distinction needs to be drawn between 'reporting' and 'advocating' a particular school of thought in an apparently democratic society.
There is nothing wrong with advocation if one's endorsement of an idea is expressed in non-violent means. It is the passion and conviction behind advocation that brings intelligent synthesis and refinement of ideas. To snuff it out is synonymous with the murder of the true spirit of democracy.
The attempt to limit press freedom with political threat is repugnant and the attempt to stamp out advocation in the name of national unity is simply and utterly an act of ignorance.
