Deafening silence

MY CONGRATULATIONS to Peter Sherwood (Sunday Morning Post, May 23) for his Spectrum article.

In the wake of the Bangkok factory fire I was disgusted and ashamed at the lack of both public and editorial outrage, all symptomatic of our diseased values.

How many more of these exploitative establishments are there helping to support the ''economic miracle'' of the Asia-Pacific Rim, where growth for growth's sake, the ideology of the cancer cell, has become the single guiding principle? Of course we all know the answer but are all too busy pursuing stability and prosperity (read: maintaining the status quo in which I have an advantage so I can satisfy my greed) to speak out.

With nothing left but the supreme power of the almighty dollar we seem doomed to become buried beneath a monument of Mercedes Benz, gold Rolexes, mobile telephones and other preposterous gadgetry that distracts our attention from the sheer idiocy of thiswhole unsustainable charade.

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, ''to sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men''.
