In anticipation of its role as host of the 2004 Olympics, Athens is expanding its metro system. The US$2.5 billion (about HK$19.5 billion) project includes two new lines, adding nearly 20 kilometres and 21 stations. Thirteen new stations opened in January. Initial excavations uncovered remains dating back to ancient times, including bathhouses, aqueducts, a sarcophagus and a room filled with oil lamps. Photographs and replicas of some interesting finds will decorate stations in the area of the excavations. Fax copy for Signposts to 2980 3140. E-mail: mikec@scmp.com
