Young people are being targeted as future activists for democracy on the mainland.

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China has plans to produce cheap CD-Roms which will be sold to young people to arouse their awareness of and interest in democracy.

Alliance chairman Szeto Wah, also a Democratic Party legislator, said yesterday the goal of the project was to educate the next generation and enlist their support.

'We know it will be a long road in our fight for democracy. We hope the younger generation will continue the mission.' The alliance kicked off a four-day signature campaign yesterday, part of a series of protests and activities to mark the forthcoming anniversary of the June 4, 1989, Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Mr Szeto said the signatures collected would be 'incinerated' during a planned vigil on June 4 at Victoria Park.

He would not predict how many signatures would be collected or how many people would turn up at the vigil.
