A vice-mayor of a Guangxi city was executed yesterday for accepting bribes worth more than 3.9 million yuan (HK$3.6 million), the latest official to be punished in the campaign against rampant corruption.
After a case review by the Supreme People's Court, Li Chenglong, 48, was put to death in the impoverished southern region of Guangxi, where he worked as a vice-mayor of Guigang city, Xinhua said.
Li was given the death sentence by Yulin Municipal Intermediate People's Court in January last year, Xinhua said. Li appealed against the sentence last July but lost. He was convicted of bribery and having unexplained sources of income, Xinhua said.
It said that in exchange for approving promotions, loans, land and construction contracts, Li took more than 3.7 million yuan (HK$3.3 million), US$25,000 (HK$194,375) and $10,000 in bribes between 1991 and 1996.
His wealth was estimated at more than 16 million yuan. A vice-mayor then earned about 600 yuan a month.
In August, former Guangxi vice-chairman Xu Bingsong was jailed for life for accepting bribes amounting to 550,000 yuan. A former chairman of the province and vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, Cheng Kejie, has also been expelled from the legislative body on corruption charges involving more than 38 million yuan. He is expected to be prosecuted soon.
