Mainland police smashed a bookmaking centre allegedly run by a Hong Kong man in Panyu, Guangdong, Xinhua reported yesterday.

SAR resident Wu Ka-kui was arrested when mainland police, acting on a tip-off, raided the centre in a commercial building in Sha Wan Town, Panyu, on April 18.

Investigations showed Wu and his alleged accomplices had invested more than 600,000 yuan (HK$558,000) in the illegal centre equipped with satellite televisions.

The report said the syndicate made more than 410,000 yuan in profit through collecting bets on horse racing in March.

'The centre mainly collected bets on horse racing in Hong Kong and Macau, soccer matches around the world and the Mark Six lottery in Hong Kong,' the Xinhua report said.
