Organisers of the Sunday Ice Hockey University League have hopes of a bright future as the curtain fell on its inaugural season last night. An All-Stars team from University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Polytechnic University (PolyU) took the first league title after they triumphed 4-1 over another All-Stars side from the University of Science of Technology (UST) and City University (CityU) at Shamshuipo's Dragon Centre. 'The response was overwhelming this year,' said Asia Sports official Keith Fung. A total of 90 university students from an initial 400 applicants were admitted this season. 'The Sunday league has been run for two years and the sponsor decided to include university students this season,' Fung said. 'I expect the league will go from strength to strength if the students invite friends to play.' Fung said the initiative to have two mixed teams in the final, rather than the top two teams after the preliminary round, was to encourage more students to take part. UST finished top of the round-robin phase, followed by PolyU, while HKU and CityU came third and fourth.
