Thousands flocked to Jockey Club betting centres yesterday in the hope of winning today's record $200 million Triple Trio jackpot. A rollover jackpot has stoked up the huge total which can be won for $10 if punters manage to pick the first three horses in the third, fourth and sixth races at Sha Tin today. Long queues snaked away from off-course betting centres as people rushed to buy tickets. Interest is expected to peak today. All off-course betting branches, the telebet centre and the customer input terminal service are scheduled to open at 8am today to cope with the huge demand. At a Central branch, crowded with punters hoping to win a fortune, businessman Thomas Ma, 40, clutched 11 tickets and said he and a friend between them had invested about $3,000 on tickets to try to hit the jackpot. 'I'm buying hope with these tickets. I've got to give it a shot, especially when there's a jackpot of that size to be had,' he said. Tony Chow, 50, said he had raised his usual bet of $100 to $500 for the occasion. 'I know I'm not the only one throwing money into this,' he said pointing to his friend, holding a pile of tickets, who had staked about $3,000. Manager Anita Tang, 45, said her bet for the Triple Trio was four times her normal stake. 'I normally spend about $20, but today I want to try my luck and increase the bet to $80,' she said. Sylvia Chan bought one ticket from the counter and said: 'If I'm the chosen one, then even if I only have one ticket, the money will come to my pocket.' A previous record payout of $133.5 million for one $10 winning ticket, in March 1998, was shared by two punters who each staked a $5 bet.
