I'm convinced that the polite, English message asking patrons to turn off their mobile phones and pagers during film showings at the cinema clearly translates into Cantonese as: 'Leave your phones on to irritate the hell out of Westerners in the audience.' This would explain the 18-plus phones that rang during the 7.10 pm screening of Erin Brockovich at the UA Sha Tin cinema on May 10. It would seem that some individuals took more than one call - their rudeness defeats me.

It is not an Olympic or Asian Games sport. There is no need to be the biggest, loudest and most frequent to compete for international selection. Neither is it impressive to be so selfish and disrespectful to other audience members.

Yet another chapter in the saga. When will it ever end? W. HINSON Sha Tin
