Rebecca Cheung Ying-ying, Amanda Chan Tsz-man and Joey Pun Chung-yee - second year arts students from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) - will attend intensive advanced courses at universities in Heidelberg, Tuebingen and Bremen for three to four weeks. Ms Cheung, an English major, also won the HKU World Wide Scholarship worth $35,000 to study at Bonn University for one year.

German tutor Li Ye-xuan described Ms Cheung as an 'indefatigable learner with a keen interest in German'.

'She used to make corrections to her compositions frequently and hand them over to me for assessment,' Mr Li said. 'She could do it up to eight times until the piece was perfect.' Ms Cheung said she was seeking to have the credits earned in Germany transferred to her programme at HKU so she could complete it within the usual time frame.

Exchange students usually have to defer their studies while they are abroad.
