ALEX Wong Siu-tan looks to have a middle-distance winner waiting to happen in the shape of improving youngster Enormous Way after he was noted getting home well behind Top Practitioner in yesterday's Class Five third event over 1,400 metres. This three-year-old son of Kaapstad was having only his sixth career start and thus remains open to a fair bit of natural improvement.

Time and again these Class Five contests are won by youngsters who are able to take the voluntary demotion from Class Four. Yesterday, Enormous Way's inexperience seemed to be his greatest obstacle to that scenario.

He was slowly into stride and slightly shuffled back in the run before jockey Douglas Whyte was able to switch him out and get a clear run at them in the home straight.

Even then Enormous Way was not easy to ride out as he still has a tendency to hang. But when he finally did put it all together he fairly flew to the line and looks set to be highly competitive should he strike a Class Five mile or 1,800-metre contest.

He also appeared more at home at the roomier Sha Tin expanse compared to the tight-turning city circuit over which he's raced the past two times.TLP
