The reality behind relaxed porn laws

I refer to the letter by H.R.K. Bentley headlined, 'Porn and crime rate unproven' (South China Morning Post, May 24).

Your correspondent is correct. There was indeed a drop in the number of sexual crimes when Scandinavian countries liberalised their porn laws.

However, this was due to the concurrent rescinding of laws against homosexuality which was no longer considered a crime.

There is evidence that, while overall sexual crimes decreased in number because gays were no longer prosecuted, the number of serious sexual offences such as rape actually increased.

Perhaps Grace Pow (letter, Post, May 24) is not the only one who needs to direct the reader to some facts and figures.
