A showdown was averted yesterday when land owners at Luen Wo Market in Fanling agreed to delay the eviction of tenants. Evictions from the land, owned by Lee Wui and Pang Fu-wah, were postponed to July 31 after hours of negotiations between 100 tenants and the owners' solicitor. The tenants have been living at the market since before 1973, when a court awarded the present ownership rights. Action to take over the land did not start until mid-1997 when tenants were told to leave by the end of 1998. But the owners extended the deadline several times. Sixty families once occupied the market, but about 40 have been resettled on public housing estates. The remainder are still waiting for public housing apartments to be allocated.
