What is a one-armed bandit? It is a coin-operated gambling machine. Coins dropped into a slot activate reels marked in horizontal segments with different symbols.

The machine pays out by dropping into a cup from two to all the coins in the machine, depending on how the symbols line up when the reels come to rest.

The term one-armed bandit arose from the single handle and the ability of the operators to adjust the rate of payoff. The operators decreased the payoff in times of high- volume playing and increased it in slack periods.

How is the number of calories used during exercise calculated? When the body burns food during exercise to produce energy, oxygen is used up while carbon dioxide and heat are given off. Scientists can measure the amount of calories used by measuring any of the three components.

One method is to measure either the amount of oxygen consumed or carbon dioxide produced in exhaled air. The air is collected and its percentage of oxygen is determined by using a machine that can analyse the oxygen content in a gas.

Another more precise method is to use a 'room calorimeter'.
