He might have had one of last year's biggest dance-floor fillers with U Don't Know Me, but clubbers the world over do know New York mix maestro Armand Van Helden (right). The music maker, producer and remixer has stormed charts all the world over, sparred with Britain's big-beat supremo Fatboy Slim, and even sampled Gary Numan's Cars for his latest single Koochy. And now he's in Hong Kong. Van Helden will be one of the biggest names to hit the SAR this year when he touches down to play at the Regal Airport Hotel on Saturday, June 24. Channel [V] is bringing Van Helden to Hong Kong and other Asian cities as part of their Club [V] series of dance parties around the region. But Van Helden is used to travelling, he grew up on the go because his father was in the US Air Force. After moving to Boston and then New York, he established himself as a DJ favourite with club-goers, before churning more mixes than a restaurant blender. Van Helden's Midas touch has yet to elude him and he arrives fresh from the success of his new album, Killing Puritans, which has received widespread praise. On the album he throws in everything from synthesiser pop, heavy metal and hip hop with the typical house music that has packed dancefloors everywhere. 'I hear dance music and house music, they ain't singing nothing but 'Oh let's be happy, love's beautiful, get on the floor and dance'. I'm over there trying to throw around something for you to think about,' says Van Helden of his latest opus. And he claims he did not even know who made Cars, with its unmistakable synthesiser riff. 'Ninety per cent of dance [club culture] I couldn't care less about. It's about 10 per cent that I enjoy. I still believe in the force, the original intent of what house music was trying to do and, just in case the public forgot, it's called culture clash number one.' Van Helden insists it's about breaking down walls. So the Regal Airport Hotel be warned. Tickets are priced at $340 in advance or $400 for those who want to risk queueing at the door. Available from all HMV stores.
