Inside Out, the Chinese art exhibition currently causing a diplomatic storm in Australia, will come to Hong Kong in September. The Asia Society says there has been no problem bringing the entire show here, although the contemporary art exhibition, which features artists including Geng Jianyi (The Second Situation, above) has been criticised by the Chinese ambassador in Australia for damaging China's international standing. At first glance, the new Arts Development Council (ADC) members' list reveals nothing unusual. Apart from some familiar names such as Patrick Ho, Professor Lo King-man and Danny Yung, the rest on the 13-member list are likely to draw blank looks, even within the local arts community. But we do, however, recognise Fei Fih. Now wasn't she the spokeswoman for Tung Chee-hwa before he was appointed as SAR's first Chief Executive? In fact, on closer examination, more of the names of these new members ring a few bells. Chan Man-hung, for instance, is the head of Commercial Press, Peter K.K. Lee is a deputy to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Dr Peter Wong King-keung is a member of the Airport Authority. 'Forget about art. This is hardcore backroom politics and power struggle,' says one council member, who wants to remain anonymous. But then this is the ADC. When has it been about anything else? On a positive note, this injection of new blood may open up an otherwise cliquey art group. Our insider says the new additions, from diverse backgrounds, should add dynamism to the council. If the chemistry is right, the group might even rub a few creative sparks off each other. Or they may explode in each others' faces. Some say the new members were appointed to balance the council's power base. Our source tells us: 'The Home Office Bureau submitted a list of recommended names to both Anson Chan and Tung Chee-hwa. The final list is a compromise. The Home Office Bureau itself has very little say in the matter.' But not only the new appointments are raising eyebrows. Chan Wing-wah and Lo King-man been appointed for more than three consecutive years. Why? This is not the general practice. 'Still, these are early days. This new composition might work very well. People like Rocco Yim are really dedicated and involved in the development of local arts,'' the source adds. The council will stand from July 1 to December 31, 2001.
