Prominent barrister Kevin Egan hit out yesterday at those responsible for distributing pamphlets in an effort to blacken his reputation.

He has referred the smear campaign to the police and legal bodies for investigation.

Written in Chinese, the pamphlets have been handed to passersby outside court buildings by a group calling itself the 'Company in Pursuit of Justice', advising people not to hire the counsel as their legal representative.

Mr Egan's integrity and competence are attacked in the pamphlets, which he said were also distributed outside Lai Chi Kok detention centre, at bus stops and on the streets of Mongkok and Central.

'My reaction is simple: the content of the pamphlets is trash, the people who distribute them are trash and the people responsible for writing the pamphlets are trash,' Mr Egan said.

'This has been going on for a while. Everyone going to visit inmates in Lai Chi Kok detention centre would have received one.' He has reported the matter to authorities including the police, the Bar Association and the Law Society.
