The speed with which Hong Kong SAR Government functionaries move to accommodate the rich and powerful is amazing.
Housing Authority chairwoman Rosanna Wong's assertion that the Government's decision to suspend the sale of subsidised flats has nothing to do with politics, is a feeble attempt to hide the fact that the Government panders to big business. Her explanation to justify the Government's decision is typical bureaucratic twaddle.
A democratic government cannot take an ostracised decision like this and expect to stay in power. Just when average citizens felt that the dream of owning a house was within their grasp our unrepresentative government moved swiftly and snatched it from them. Actions like this will only make a non-elected government more unpopular.
The honourable thing for Ms Wong to have done would have been to resign after all the recent scandals, but this Government is not about taking responsibility, it is about passing the buck. Hong Kong must have a representative government that can feel for its people.
