MAINLAND leaders believe Tung Chee-hwa should serve another five-year term, a member of a business delegation said on his return from meetings in Beijing yesterday. Speaking about the group's meeting with President Jiang Zemin, Philip Wong Yu-hong, also a Legislative Councillor, said: 'That's not the exact way he put it. But every one of us knows the meaning. I got the feeling [there was support for a second term].' Both Henry Tang Ying-yen and Tsang Hin-chi said they did not remember Mr Jiang's exact remarks. 'Certainly, he said the central Government was satisfied with the performance of the SAR Government, especially the way it had handled the financial turmoil,' Mr Tang said. 'He urged the business sector to unite to contribute to the development of Hong Kong and China.' Local National People's Congress deputy Raymond Wu Wai-yung, who also sits on the influential Basic Law Committee, said: 'People . . . should understand that the trust of Beijing is important if we are to enjoy a high degree of autonomy. There will be a lot of difficulties if the central Government does not have full trust in our Chief Executive. 'At a time when there is no full mutual trust between the SAR and the mainland, it is important that we have a Chief Executive who has the trust of Beijing.'
