Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa hosted a lunch for the heads of the Universities Committee recently at Government House. Mr Tung and the university heads shared the view that education was the key to Hong Kong's development into a knowledge-based economy and to its long-term competitiveness. He said that education reform was a long-term undertaking and must be implemented step by step. He added that good education was the responsibility of the entire community. The university heads were Professor Chang Hsin-Kang, City University; Professor Patrick Cheng Yiu-chung, University of Hong Kong; Professor Ruth Hayhoe, Hong Kong Institute of Education; Professor Arthur Li Kwok-cheung, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Professor Nyaw Mee-kau, Lingnan University; Professor Poon Chung-kwong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Dr Daniel Tse Chi-wai, Hong Kong Baptist University; and Professor Chia Wei-woo, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
