MEETING Point member Wai Hing-cheung said yesterday he would be standing for the Regional Council by-election in Sai Kung to replace Gilbert Leung Kam-ho.

Mr Wai, a Sha Tin District Board elected member, said he wanted to strengthen the liberal party's presence in Sai Kung. Although his district board constituency was not in Sai Kung, Mr Wai said he was in touch with the community as campaign manager for legislator Andrew Wong Wang-fat during the 1991 Legislative Council elections.

A final decision would be made by core members of Meeting Point before the weekend, he said.

To rule out competition, Mr Wai said Meeting Point would persuade its liberal allies to back them. An elected member of the Sai Kung District Board, Francis Chau Yin-ming, said he was interested in the Regco poll. The United Democrats of Hongkong and theAssociation for Democracy and People's Livelihood are soon to discuss whether they will back any candidates for the by-election.
