Textile and garment executives have returned from a visit to fashion houses and design institutes in Italy with ambitious proposals to bolster Hong Kong's clothing industries. The group, which calls itself The Steering Committee of the Campaign to Promote the Image of the Clothing and Textile Industry, seeks to promote Hong Kong as a regional fashion-design centre. Members of the week-long study mission to Florence, Milan and Venice hope to start an internship programme that would give young fashion professionals from the SAR exposure to Italy's high value-added textile and garment industries. The visitors were also impressed with the Italian system of continuous education for fashion-industry workers and hope to create on-the-job training opportunities for new recruits to Hong Kong's own fashion industries. They believed greater effort should be made to organise trade conferences and exhibitions to promote the SAR's textile industry and to attract international representatives to Hong Kong. Finally, the SAR should build on its competitive strengths - by focusing on knit and woven fabrics and high value-added clothing, enhancing co-operation with the mainland and neighbouring countries, and building a Fashion and Garment Centre to develop Hong Kong as Asia's fashion hub. The campaign is a co-operative effort between the Textile Council and the Government's newly created Innovation and Technology Commission. The campaign would also include several multimedia promotions such as a film and television spots and a symposium.
