Stephen Gately (Polydor) 'I still believe in you, oh you/You're my every dream come true/And that is why/I just can't say goodbye' is almost all you need to know about this collection of largely whimpering lurve odes. This is the first solo album from one of the five boys of the currently resting Boyzone - successors to Take That and successful beyond comprehension.New Beginning will probably be a hit, even though the cloying awfulness of the cheesy ballads within is sufficient to make wallpaper turn up at the corners. A couple of songs alleviate the mawkishness by moving faster than walking pace (notably a flimsy imitation of George Michael's Faith ), but most merge into one soppy mess. There are lots of karaoke-friendly verses expected of performers groomed to a record company formula. Perhaps that's why Boyzone and their ilk come with a built-in absence of imagination: such qualities would no doubt put ripples in the blanket of blandness which coats records like this.
