AUSTRALIAN openers Mark Taylor and Michael Slater gave their side a great start in the first Test, in Manchester, after being put in by England.
They shared an opening partnership of 128.
After Slater was out, caught by Alec Stewart off Phil DeFreitas for 58, David Boon joined Taylor and chipped in with 11 as the tourists reached 148 for one by tea, Taylor was unbeaten on 70.
In the shortened opening session, Taylor had reached 26 and debutant Slater 30 as the Australians coasted to 58 without loss by lunch.
They faced all England's five front-line bowlers in the shortened first session, without encountering much difficulty.
The innings looked like following the pattern of the last Ashes opener in England four years ago, when Australia amassed 601 for seven declared after being asked to bat first.
