The nationwide search for the son of NBA great Julius Erving ended just metres from the family's home near Orlando, Florida. Cory Erving's car was pulled out of a pond with his body inside.
'The family have been notified,' said Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger. 'They're devastated.' Erving, 19, disappeared on May 28 after a trip to a store for bread for a Memorial Day family picnic. His car was found by authorities and volunteers in a two-metre-deep pond at the end of a dirt path near the Erving home in Heathrow.
'There's a possibility that this was an accident,' Eslinger said. Investigators believe the car had been in the water since Erving disappeared. The car's windows were up and the driver's side seat belt was not fastened.
Erving disappeared on what was supposed to be a 20-minute shopping trip. He was last seen at a mall in Lake Mary, about 30 kilometres north of Orlando. His father went public on June 13, asking for help in finding his son, who had a learning disability described as a mild form of dyslexia and attention deficit disorder.
