Everyone at St Paul's Co- educational College was in high spirits as six students  achieved outstanding results in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination. One of them scored six As and the other five obtained  five As each.

The students were delighted as they did not expect such brilliant results.

Aneurin Ho Wing-lau, 19, scored straight A(1)s in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Use of English [AS] and Liberal Studies [AS] and  an A(2) in Chinese Language and Culture [AS].

Anna Tai Yin- ping, 18, scored  A(1)s in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Use of English [AS] and Liberal Studies [AS] and a B(3) in Chinese Language and Culture [AS].

Both science students have applied to study medicine at  the University of Hong Kong.  They believe that a doctor's job is very challenging.

'Medicine is a combination of science and art,' said Wing-lau.  'Doctors use scientific ways to cure patients, and need to be  dexterous when performing surgery and examining patients.' Alan Chan  Kwok-lun and Richard Wong Wing-cheuk, also science students, would like to change their field of study at university.

Kwok-lun, 19, scored  A(1)s in Chemistry, Physics and Pure Mathematics and  A(2)s in Use of English [AS] and Chinese Language and Culture [AS].

'I would like to study accounting at the Chinese University of Hong Kong,' he said.  'I found out that I was more interested in  administration and management taking part in extra-curricular activities.' Wing-cheuk scored five straight A(1)s in Biology, Chemistry, Use of English [AS], Chinese Language and Culture [AS] and  Liberal Studies [AS] and  a B(3) in Physics. The 18-year-old  hopes to study government and law at  the University of Hong Kong.

Betty Yee Man-yin, 19, obtained A(1)s in Chemistry, Physics, Pure Mathematics and Use of English [AS] and  an A(2) in  Chinese Language and Culture [AS].

Man-yin was nominated by the school to study at  the University of Cambridge.

'I chose information engineering as I am interested in mathematics,' she said.  I think it would help  to develop my maths knowledge in a more logical and practical way.' Arts student Katie Fung Kar- hing, 19,  scored  A(1)s in  Use of English [AS] and Chinese Language and Culture [AS],  A(2)s in Economics, Geography and Mathematics and Statistics [AS] and  a B(3) in English Literature.

Kar-hing hopes to study law  at the University of Hong Kong as she wants to be a lawyer.

The six students allocated their time well and did not believe in last-minute cramming.

'Although I spent more than 10 hours studying before the exam, it doesn't mean that I only revised  right before the exam,' said Wing-cheuk. 'I study every day.' She said taking good notes would help students study more effectively.

Kwok-lun said it was important to strike a balance between play and study.  'It is important to balance your time between studying and relaxing. I spent about three hours  studying every day, but I also  sang, watched TV and played  basketball and badminton to refresh my mind.' Wing-lau said it was important to maintain good health. 'Some of my classmates worked too hard and  fell ill during the exam,  which affected their performance.' Yin-ping said her family was supportive and did not give her any pressure. 'They let me study on my own. Sometimes, they tempted me to watch TV.' The outstanding  students were grateful to their teachers  for their patient teaching.

'The school provides an excellent environment for studying,' said Wing-lau. 'We were encouraged to carry out discussions so we could better understand the material.' Jessica is a summer intern from Hong Kong Shue Yan College
