The advert which carried an article headlined, 'All you need to know about soy' (South China Morning Post, June 19), left me confused about what is safe to eat. Contrary to current thinking, the advert listed numerous deleterious effects supposedly connected with eating soy products.
As this paper's columnist Dr Rose Ong noted in her advocacy of them (Post, June 12), soybean products have been a staple of the Chinese diet for ages, seemingly with no ill-effects. Also of late, many findings have promoted the usefulness of the plant oestrogens contained in soy products in countering osteoporosis. As a healthy alternative to milk, I (like many mothers) encourage my kids to drink soy milk. Bean curd dishes are frequently included in our diet. Is there evidence to suggest that consumption or over-consumption is harmful to children's development? Could someone in an informed position shed some light on this matter? LOUISE YOUNG Mid-Levels
