CHILD star Cheng Pak-lam, a pupil at La Salle Primary School, is an environment ambassador both in school and the community.

  He turns off the fans and lights after class and helps his mother to grow flowers at home.

  ''I don't mind giving up the comfort of electric fans and air-conditioner during summer in order to save energy. In fact, I could sleep on a bamboo mat because it can keep me really cool!'' he told Young Post.

  Little Pak-lam, eight, is the youngest environment ambassador chosen to help spread the green message by the Environmental Protection Department.

  Others include mega-pop idols Andy Lau Tak-wah, Aaron Kwok Fu-shing, Sally Yeh and veteran movie stars Dodo Cheng Yu-ling and Chow Yun-fatt.

  Cheng has the habit of saving resources by bringing her own chopsticks and lunch box with her wherever she goes. When she was in Canada, she would cycle instead of drive a car as she lived near downtown.

  ''But I can't do it here because of the danger. Hongkong drivers are not as considerate,'' she said.

 ''I think everyone should take a good look at their home. Do not buy or accept from others things you don't need.''   Both Cheng and singer Sally Yeh advocate using ''doggy-bags'' (bags used for taking away left-over food in a restaurant).

  Yeh said: ''Even if just two pieces of bones are left on the plate, I would ask for a doggy-bag and bring them home. I can give them to my dog.''   To reduce consumption of plastic bags, Yeh uses the same bag until holes start appearing. ''When it comes to protecting the environment, one cannot bother too much about nice appearance all the time!''     Andy Lau also hates to see food wasted and would gently remind his friends to be aware of that. However, he admitted there was one thing he could not help doing - eating out of polystyrene lunch boxes during work.

  ''But I will try my best not to use polystyrene at home,'' he said.

  Like the others, actor Chow Yun-fat takes a shower instead of a bath.

  ''I also think everyone should bring their own lunch box to the workplace. It is a matter of making a habit out of what seems inconvenient. You won't find it a nuisance after you get used to it.''   It may be hard to believe that Aaron Kwok could squeeze time out of his hectic singing career to do home cooking, but he does, sometimes.

  ''I usually cover my utensils when I cook, it saves fuel that way,'' he said.

  Pollution-conscious, Kwok also prompts his friends to regularly give their cars a check-up to ensure their exhaust emission is under control.

  Cigarette stubs are ugly sights to him and he would ask his friend to dispose of them properly.

  These are by no means all the secrets of how celebrities live up to their environmental ambassadors' responsibilities.

Child star Cheng Pak-lam is a true environment ambassador. He does not mind
