Mobile phone to access Net information

Jacky Wong

Consumers can watch videos and listen to music with the next generation of mobile phone devices, thanks to a collaborative effort between Nokia and RealNetworks.

The two firms will develop and distribute Internet technology for future wireless devices, and Nokia will install RealNetworks' RealPlayer technology in its smart phones, which would give users wireless access to multimedia Web content.

Students will not have to carry heavy and bulky backpacks anymore if goReader successfully catches on at universities across the United States.

GoReader is a device about the size of a laptop computer with a colour screen. It can hold textbooks in its memory and weighs less than 2.3 kilograms.

The device is from an Internet start-up of the same name. The firm plans to work together with publishers to supply material for students to download from the Internet.

Students can also jot down notes and highlight passages.

Internet users are always requested to send their personal information to site owners, but they do not know whether the information would be sent to third parties.

To play safe, you should bear in mind the findings of a survey conducted by New Zealand- based research company SimplyQuick.com The firm studied the privacy policies of the top 101 consumer Web sites. Among them, only 14 did not require users to submit personal information. Over half of the remaining 87 sites permitted the sharing of information to third parties.
