Chairman Charles Yeung Chun-kam revealed the plan during yesterday's press conference for the company's annual results. He said the company had formed a team to study the proposal.

Under the plan, the company will launch an Internet logistics centre which provides an integrated electronic supply-chain management service to merchants on the mainland.

Payment for these services would be received through the company's 480 retailing shops represented in more than 300 mainland cities, director Herman Hui said.

'Payment is regarded as a main obstacle for the development of e-commerce business on the mainland since China has yet to establish an online banking system,' Mr Hui said.

However, the model the company is setting up could overcome that obstacle by offering a bricks-and-mortar payment option, he said.

Mr Yeung said the company was lining up strategic partners and expected to invest up to HK$50 million in the system.
