Broker takes swipe at share trading monolith

The share trading monopoly held by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing has come under fire from US-based online broker Charles Schwab, which claims the system discourages competition and the development of electronic trading.

The company's regional general manager for Asia, Christina Hui Sui-wing, said there was no legal restriction on the number of exchanges in the US - which explained the rapid development of electronic trading systems in that country.

Number up for Ho's casino monopoly

Tycoon Stanley Ho Hung-sun is to lose his monopoly on casinos in Macau next year, dashing his hopes of extending the franchise for up to five years.

Licences will be granted to several rival operators, and US and Australian advisers are to be brought in to help the Government restructure its casino set-up.
