Coma TCM, 9pm Michael Crichton dropped out of Harvard University, the last straw apparently being his disappointment over his low marks for an essay on George Orwell. Not long after, he dropped out of a career in medicine. From these false starts he went on to find huge success as a multi-talented novelist, screenwriter, movie director and TV producer. Today he may be best known for his medical drama ER and for penning the Jurassic Park novels. But in the 1970s he made his name with the likes of Westworld, which he wrote and directed, and his second movie, the chilling thriller Coma, in which he put his experience of the medical world to good use. French Canadian Genevieve Bujold (above with Michael Douglas) is the young doctor who goes against superiors to find out why patients keep inexplicably falling into comas on the operating table. The terror that ensues will put anyone off checking into hospital (1978). Hexed Cinemax, 10pm Hit and miss comedy about a hotel clerk (Arye Gross) with ideas above his station who finds himself in hot water when he gets caught up with a manic model, Hexina (Claudia Christian). Hexina is being blackmailed for the murders she committed years ago, when she was too fat for the catwalk, and mistakenly believes Gross is the blackmailer. As usual, no one believes his story (1993). Chicago Hope World, 9pm Troubles continue at the beleaguered hospital. This week a rat infestation indicates that this is still the least desirable place to be treated in Chicago. Doctors, meanwhile, face legal action over their efforts to impregnate a woman who has just miscarried, using sperm harvested from her dead husband. Chinese American actor BD Wong, who won almost every theatre award going for his performance in M. Butterfly, guest stars as the obstetrician in trouble. He also starred in Seven Years In Tibet (above) with Brad Pitt. African Adventures: Phinda Game Reserve; Sossusvlei Hot Air Ballooning Discovery, 7.30pm Michelle Gasforth and Sami Sabiti complete their adventures in Africa by exploring the coastal Phinda reserve of Zululand, South Africa, where they watch big cats (above), go scuba diving in Indian Ocean waters that rival Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and marvel at the seven different ecosystems to be observed in the area. Finally, they travel above the huge dunes of the Namib desert, Namibia, by hot air balloon, to the tented Sossusvlei Karos Lodge. Africa From The Ground Up: Crocodiles In The Nursery National Geographic, 8pm Africa is flavour of the evening, with the continent revealed from the perspective of its smallest creatures in Africa From The Ground Up. This episode focuses on the birds of Botswana's Okavango Swamp, which share their waters with a large array of other animals, including the crocodiles that lurk on the sandy banks.
