Afamiliar sight in any of Hong Kong's public outdoor sport facilities, is people playing basketball or some sprinting down a soccer pitch with a ball. Perhaps you may have noticed that all these people are male.
Now consider how often do you see females on the courts or pitches. Chances are, never or very rarely. Does Hong Kong's society regard them as people who are fragile and who should stick to less strenuous activities?
This is unlikely, though, especially when you look at the number of school teams that exist for girls. A variety of sports such as volleyball, netball, and basketball are all represented by females at school, and the number of participants is on the rise. However, the question remains that if these girls are willing to play for schools, why don't you see them playing more often on public grounds.
There will undoubtedly be girls who shop during their free time, or do their nails. So, that is why they are not on the courts. That is only stereotyping people.
It is somewhat discouraging when I go to the basketball courts to find that there are only men. I want to play, but at the same time, I do not want to play because it is intimidating to play with strangers, but even more so because they are all male.
Just because I want to play, it does not necessarily mean that the men are going to let me. I am sure that not everyone will agree with me, but I am also sure that there are other females out there who feel the same way I do.
