Why do plants need biological clocks?
LING-YAM
Plants need their own internal 'clocks' to regulate daily and seasonal activities, such as opening and closing flowers and producing leaves, flowers and seeds.
Because plants cannot travel, they cannot move to locations with better conditions during a day or a season. An animal, for example, can move into the sun if it feels cold or go into the shade if it is too hot.
Instead, plants carry out all their activities in one spot. They need to be able to monitor changes in light conditions, humidity, rainfall and temperatures and then adapt to the changes. Plants have to do things at the best possible times to ensure the survival of the species.
If plants are placed in a situation where conditions do not change, they will still follow their internal clock, which is based on an approximately 24-hour cycle, for several days.
