Jo Jo Indian Restaurant
Step off the ferry from Central and you quickly discover that for all its perceived faults, Discovery Bay has a good selection of restaurants. Overwhelmed for choice, we decided on an Indian meal and walked upstairs to Jo Jo's, finding ourselves in a quiet restaurant with a partial view of the bay. We later discovered the kitchen has the best sea view, which seemed odd.
One of us opted for the set lunch ($58) which comprised crispy poppadoms, a vegetable samosa, lamb curry, chicken tikka, vegetable curry and rice. The lamb curry was probably the best of the lot - tender and spicy - followed by the vegetable curry, which was mild and pleasant.
Two other starters were mixed. The mulligatawny soup ($35) was thin but spicy and contained plenty of onion, while the eight pieces of onion bhajis were delightfully light and crispy. For the main course, we rated the Goan fish curry ($68) as being best with its huge slabs of white fish in a rich tomato sauce. The saag paneer - chunks of cottage cheese in spinach - was also rewarding.
A side dish of chickpeas with tomatoes and onions ($40) was superb for its spicy flavour and interesting texture. We accompanied the dishes with one garlic naan ($15) and a tandoori paratha ($12), both light and flavourful. One disappointing aspect of the menu was the desserts. There was only one choice - Indian sweet desserts - which we decided to skip.
Lunch for three came to $500 including service and a tip - the largest single component being for seven soft drinks which totalled $140. We liked Jo Jo's for its relaxed ambience but felt its biggest selling point - its view - was not put to good use. So we popped downstairs to Pacific Coffee, with its wall of glass, for drinks and a great view of the beach.
