Why you can trust SCMP

What's going on? A second week in clubland without a 'big-name' international DJ. It's enough to make you spit your dummy. But before you throw a tantrum, think of how much money you can save AND take the chance to support some of the SAR's underrated and undervalued home-grown talent.

Filling the void admirably will be Club Progressive, an organisation living up to its name. Since its inception two years ago, the club has run a series of successful nights, from the moody Club Star to its new home at the Kwun Tong Passenger Ferry Pier, an enlightened choice of venue. It has begun building what looks destined to be an impressive Web site (www.club-progressive. demon.co.uk) and has also started putting out CDs.

Club Progressive's motto is 'bringing you Hong Kong's finest underground DJs' and, with its music policy of progressive and hard trance, its regular nights are proving popular with local club-goers. They are perhaps more significant for the talent they showcase, not least among which is DJ Tszpun. He describes his style as epic house and melodic trance (if that's not a paradox) and he is earning quite a reputation. It is he, along with James 'Parquix' Ting, who has compiled Club Progressive - The Album, a first for the club comprising five original tracks. And it's available for free. You can pick up a copy from QuikSilver (1/F, 10 Pak Sha Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2836 6073) or Works Records (G/F, 38 Hankow Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2369 3712).

To hear Tszpun live, head for the ferry pier on August 5 at 11pm. He's supported by Dougie, Sunn and Raymond.
