A heroin addict armed with a chopper attacked and seriously injured a nurse because he thought she had diluted his methadone dose or given him something else.

Chan Yuk-wah, 46, pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of wounding with intent before District Court judge Alan Wright, who heard he attacked the nurse as she made her way to work at the Robert Black Health Centre in Wong Tai Sin on May 16.

Wong Lee-ching, 44, tried to fend Chan off and begged him not to harm her but he did not stop and only fled when a passerby witnessed the incident and screamed for help, said prosecutor Kathie Cheung.

Ms Wong suffered head, hand and shoulder injuries and was in hospital for nearly three weeks. Judge Wright was concerned she might have suffered a permanent disability and called for a detailed medical assessment before sentencing Chan on August 29.

Chan was arrested at the health centre on the day of the attack.
