Calvin Hill always wanted Grant to do whatever he wanted to do. He never pushed his son into following his footsteps and becoming an NFL player. Things have worked out quite nicely for Grant, thank you.
'My feeling is that it's important for any child to do whatever they enjoy doing. It is not necessary for parents to tell their children what to do. It has worked out very well for Grant,' said the elder Hill, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Dallas Cowboys following their 24-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins in 1972.
'There's a lot of pressure when you're playing pro sports,' smiled Calvin. 'I have had this experience myself and I can relate these things to Grant because I have been there before.'
Calvin, a former NFL Rookie of the Year, set all kinds of records in his heyday, including becoming the first player at Dallas to rush more than 1,000 yards in a season. He rushed for 1,036 yards during the 1971-72 season.
'It's a truly memorable feeling to win the championship ring. I remember the feeling. The feeling was good. When we beat Miami, from that moment, I said 'Hey, I'm the best in the world at that moment'. A lot of great players didn't win the ring.'
Calvin hopes everything will work out for his son. 'As a father I always wanted my son to do the best he could; that he accepts nothing but the best,' he said.
