There will be greater scope for bilateral co-operation between India and China following Beijing's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
China's Ambassador to India, Zhou Gang, told a seminar in New Delhi last week he was confident that bilateral trade relations would improve, noting that the two neighbours shared 'extensive common interests'.
He was addressing a forum organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries. The forum, attended by public and private sector figures, discussed the prospects and concerns of both countries in the post WTO-era.
Mr Zhou thanked the Indian Government for supporting China's entry to the WTO. He said China would continue reforms while adapting to the trends of international economic co-operation and competition,
Mr Zhou acknowledged that China would face many challenges once it joined the WTO, especially in industry.
Noting that China had emerged as the world's leading trading nation, Dr V. S. Seshadri, joint secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, said India and China should explore and expand trade opportunities with each other. He also urged Indian exporters to diversify.
