Hong Kong launch of two handheld organisers with upgraded operating systems to target first-time buyers
Palm, the maker of the handheld organisers of the same name, today unveils two new models for the Hong Kong market, and will announce details of its Internet strategy.
The new Palms, the m100 and the IIIxe, are aimed at entry-level users and run on the new Palm OS3.5 operating system.
The m100 runs on two megabytes of RAM while the IIIxe has 8MB.
The m100, released in the United States last week, features a completely new design and a lower price tag of HK$1,280. The IIIxe, retailing in the US for US$249, will be available in Hong Kong in October.
The most striking feature is the ability for the user to change the unit's casing. Replacement faceplates, which are available in five colours, cost HK$160 each. It also features a protective screen cover, which folds behind the unit, or can be removed. The cover has a clear window for a time display.
The operating system has been upgraded to recognise handwritten notes marked directly on the main screen.
3Com product manager Timothy Twerdahl said the product would appeal to students and the mass market.
